A Monterey Resident's Field Guide to Car Week 2026

Car Week is not one event. It is ten days of overlapping shows, auctions, and dinners that reshape which streets you can drive, which restaurants take a walk-in, and which corners of Asilomar and Alvarado belong to visitors versus locals. If you live in Monterey, the useful question is not "what should I see," it is "when and where does the week actually give something back to residents."

The short answer: the free and family-scaled events on the shoulders of the week are the ones built with locals in mind. The marquee ticketed shows in the middle of the week are the ones that dictate traffic, parking, and dinner scarcity, whether you attend them or not. Plan around both.

The week at a glance

Car Week runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 16, 2026, with events at venues throughout Monterey County, anchored by WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach Golf Links. Everything else in this guide fits inside that ten-day frame.

The free stuff that locals actually use

The events built for residents cluster at the two ends of the week and off the main auction circuit. They are worth knowing by name.

The kickoff on Alvarado Street on August 7 is free. Car Week opens in downtown Monterey with a free evening car show along Alvarado Street. Walk to it. Do not attempt to park within four blocks of it.

Downtown Pacific Grove takes the following Wednesday. The Little Car Show's 16th annual takes place in downtown Pacific Grove on Wednesday, August 12, from noon to 5 p.m. It is the antidote to the six-figure-hood-ornament tone of the auctions. Micro cars, minis, and pre-2001 oddities line Lighthouse.

Asilomar hosts two days that reward residents willing to walk the coast path from Lovers Point. Electric Coast, a free EV showcase on Monday, August 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, runs along the coastline. The following night, Night Rider on Tuesday, August 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. brings lowriders and classic cars to Asilomar under evening lights, ticketed.

Two lower-key options in Old Monterey are worth flagging for locals who want to feel the week without buying a ticket. The Tuesday Old Monterey Marketplace runs its usual 4 to 8 p.m. window on Alvarado during Car Week. And on Tuesday, August 4, before the week formally begins, Surfrider Foundation Monterey County hosts a Blue Beers Mixer at Out of the Barrel beer garden from 5 to 8 p.m. The beer garden is the space that used to operate as Fieldwork Brewing. If you last visited under the old name, the location is the same.

Where the traffic bottlenecks actually form

The Concours is Sunday. That is the day the Peninsula holds its breath, and it is the easy one to plan around: stay north of Highway 68 in the morning, and stay out of Pebble entirely. The harder days are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, when the Rolex Reunion pulls thousands to Laguna Seca and the auction previews pull thousands more downtown.

Two specifics matter. First, the auction previews are open to the public and cost real money to enter. RM Sotheby's 2026 auction at the Monterey Conference Center hosts public previews on August 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and August 13 through 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a $60 weekend preview pass sold on site. That flow lands in the same blocks as Portola Plaza and Custom House, so Pacific Street and Del Monte Avenue slow noticeably in the late morning.

Second, Saturday night is the loudest downtown night of the week. The Monterey Motorsports Festival runs Saturday, August 15 from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, and it is one of the largest evening events during Car Week. Fairgrounds Road, Casa Verde, and the Del Monte on-ramps back up in both directions.

Local rule of thumb:

If you are driving north on Highway 1 after 3 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday of Car Week, you are choosing to sit in it. The 68 corridor is worse. Munras and Fremont move.

Dinner reservations are the real scarcity

The restaurants that opened or landed on best-of lists in the last twelve months are the ones that fill first. Reserve now or aim elsewhere.

The new class in downtown Monterey includes Curry Journey on Lighthouse, which opened in 2026 with a menu built on restraint, focused on doing a small number of things well rather than the standard broad Thai listing. Around the corner, Stokes Adobe, in one of Old Monterey's historic adobe homes, runs chef-driven seasonal California cuisine with outdoor fire pits. Both take Car Week walk-ins about as gracefully as you would expect.

In Pacific Grove, the Kimpton Mirador's signature restaurant is now a factor in reservation math. The Kimpton Mirador opened in Pacific Grove in February 2026, and the 99-room property is Kimpton's first branded hotel on the Central California coast, with a signature restaurant called The Caledonian and a courtyard with a fireplace. Expect it to absorb overflow from Carmel and Pebble on the Friday and Saturday of Car Week.

Two Carmel additions worth knowing about because they will pull reservations away from Monterey proper: Vin By the Sea, chef Paul Corsentino's Carmel-by-the-Sea boutique wine bar that also runs as an all-day restaurant, and Domaine Messier, a winery tasting space inside Winfield Gallery in Carmel that pours two Pinot Noirs, a Rosé of Pinot, and a Chardonnay.

If you want to eat during Car Week without a reservation, the honest answer is neighborhood coffee, bakery, and lunch counters before 11 a.m. The Perfect Crumb Bakery relocated from its Monterey storefront to Pacific Grove in October 2025. Worth the short drive over the hill.

Two evenings worth blocking off

Not everything on the calendar is car-related. Two nights at the Golden State Theatre coincide with the week's opening weekend. Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys play the Golden State Theatre on Friday, August 7 at 4 p.m. and Saturday, August 8 at 7 p.m., and Maria Bamford performs on Saturday, August 15 at 7 p.m. Two of those dates run against major Car Week evening programming, which tends to keep local ticket availability better than it otherwise would be.

If a walk beats a show, the Asilomar Sunset Music Series continues on Friday evenings through August. The series runs Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Social Hall deck at Asilomar, with live music, small bites, local beer and wine, and s'mores.

The quiet windows

A short list of hours when the Peninsula still feels like itself:

• Sunday, August 9, before noon. The Pre-Reunion is at Laguna Seca, downtown breathes.
• Monday, August 10, all day in Monterey proper. Asilomar has Electric Coast, but Alvarado, Cannery Row, and the recreation trail are usable.
• Tuesday, August 11, morning. Old Monterey Marketplace does not set up until 4 p.m.
• Sunday, August 16, in Pacific Grove and Monterey. Every visitor with a badge is in Pebble Beach for the 75th Concours. The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance enters its 75th year on August 16, 2026. Lovers Point at 8 a.m. that morning is one of the best hours of the year to have the coast to yourself.

A local's take

Car Week reads on paper like an imposition. In practice, it is a compressed test of how well you know your own streets. Residents who plan around the ticketed marquee events, walk to the free ones, and hold two dinner reservations they can flip on short notice tend to enjoy the week more than the people who fly in for it.
